Mark Arts’ Summer STEAM Academy emphasizes creativity and innovation, linking art to concepts in science, technology, engineering and math. Students are grouped by age, and will explore mixed media, drawing, painting, and on occasion, culinary and clay projects inspired by the weekly theme. Morning sessions are for ages 5-8, and afternoon sessions are for ages 9-12. The week will conclude with guest speakers from the Wichita community and a presentation of the students’ work for family, friends, and visitors.

ANIMAL KINGDOM ADVENTURES

From the jungles of India to the depths of the sea, learn about the connection between animals and their habitats and create your own representations of these magnificent creatures.

MESSY MASTERPIECES: EXPLORING COLOR

Have you ever been tickled pink? Green with envy? Or just plain blue? Learn about the relationships between colors and mix your own by swirling, spinning, painting and more.

HEROES & VILLIANS

Channel the spirit of comic book legends while creating bold and dynamic masterpieces. Students will unleash their imagination and design their own hero or villain, then bring them to life with a customized mask that reflects their unique persona. With activities ranging from drawing and painting to the fascinating world of shrink art, prepare for a week packed with creativity, excitement, and the chance to become the hero or villain of your own artistic story.

NATURE'S PALETTE

Creativity will blossom like wildflowers in the spring. Students will dive into the enchanting world of Van Gogh’s Mulberry Tree. Explore the magic of the sun with cyanotype prints that capture the essence of sunlight in every shade of blue. They will get their hands dirty with clay as they create a beautiful seed mosaic, celebrating the harmony between art and nature. This week promises a vibrant journey through the colors and textures of the natural world, where every creation is as unique as a leaf on the wind.

WIRED FOR ART

Immerse yourself in the whimsical universe of Eric Joyner, where robots and donuts collide. Students will craft their own metallic marvels from tooling foil, bringing futuristic visions to life with every bend and twist. Use Legos to create bold and dynamic robot-inspired prints. Then explore the mesmerizing world of op art, where vibrant colors and optical illusions come together to create an experience like no other. Plug in, power up, and unleash your inner artist in this electrifying week of creativity and innovation.

CURTAIN CALL CREATIVITY

The stage is set for a magical journey into the world of puppetry. Prepare to craft an array of enchanting characters, from monstrous marvels to delicate origami creations. Explore the realms of shadow and light with captivating shadow puppets that dance on the walls. Let your students’ imagination take center stage as they write their very own puppet shows. With the support of community partners, get ready to steal the show and leave the audience spellbound with the power of puppetry and the art of storytelling.

MAKING MUSIC

Creativity dances to the rhythm of Picasso’s Three Musicians. Delve into the vibrant worlds of art and music. Let music be your student’s muse as they craft artwork with themes that resonate with the soulful notes and beats of their favorite songs. But the magic doesn’t stop there – participants will channel their inner maestro as they build their own musical instruments, turning everyday materials into tools for creating beautiful melodies.

FURRY FRIENDS

Creativity is barked sparked by our beloved companions. Draw inspiration from George Rodrigue’s iconic Blue Dog as students paint their own canine masterpiece. Meow your way through a purr-fectly delightful cat project, drawing upon the vibrant and whimsical style of Laurel Burch. Then, students will “unleash” their imagination as they sculpt their very own furry friends from polymer clay, bringing to life an array of cuddly creatures that will steal your heart. This week is filled with wagging tails, whiskers, and boundless furry fun!

AROUND THE WORLD

Students’ canvases will become their passports. Settle into the majestic landscapes of the Yukon with a painting inspired by Canadian artist Ted Harrison, capturing the beauty and spirit of the northern wilderness. Embark on cultural adventures into African folktales, bringing to life the rich traditions and storytelling heritage of the continent. Then, head south to Mexico, where we’ll immerse ourselves in vibrant folk art. Finally, venture deep into the Brazilian rainforest, where we’ll encounter the fascinating creatures that call it home in this unforgettable expedition of art, culture, and creativity.

UNDER THE SEA

The wonders of the ocean come to life right here in Kansas. Let the mesmerizing artistry of Robert Wyland inspire as students paint a stunning underwater masterpiece. Explore the vibrant world beneath the surface with watercolor sea turtles and whimsical chalk portholes that offer a glimpse into a underwater world. Participants will channel the playful spirit of Matisse as they craft clay fishbowls with colorful fish and coral, transforming ordinary vessels into works of art. Get ready for a week filled with exploration, imagination, and the boundless beauty of the sea!

Embark on an out-of-this-world adventure. Blast off into the unknown as we explore the vast expanse of space, with rockets, astronauts, aliens, and planets serving as the launching pads for creative endeavors. From painting celestial landscapes to crafting extraterrestrial beings, every project this week will transport students to galaxies far, far away. Buckle up and prepare for a cosmic journey that is one small step for man, one giant leap for Mark Arts.

2024 ART-LYMPIC GAMES

Get ready to ignite your student’s artistic spirit and go for gold in a celebration of the Summer Olympics in Paris. Channel the spirit of athleticism and international unity as students dive into a wide array of sports-themed projects, paying tribute to the athletes from around the globe who inspire with their strength, skill, and determination. From the iconic Olympic rings to the dynamic energy of Paris itself, every project will capture the essence of this historic event. Join us for a week of spirited competition, artistic excellence, and the thrill of the Games.

Payment is expected in full at the time of registration. Partial refunds are issued for transferring or withdrawing from a STEAM Academy within two weeks of start date. If under-enrolled, workshops will be canceled five days before the start of STEAM week.
