Continuing Education Workshops are geared towards intermediate to advanced students who wish to progress their artistic practice. These workshops range from exploration of new techniques and skills to professional development topics.
In-Depth Exploration of Pronto Plate Printmaking
March 18 | 5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.
March 19 | 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
$260 – In this 2-day workshop, students will develop a thorough understanding of the methods and techniques used for the many variations of printing using polymer lithographic plates. Including the development of skills in creating a variety of images onto the plates using the following techniques: drawing with ball point pens, sharpie pens, #4 Lithographic Crayons and Pen & India ink. Participants will also learn painting techniques using India Ink and Acrylic Medium. Lastly, they will learn to create, transfer and print both digital & photographic images from the lithographic plates.
Through workshop/studio time, educators will deepen their knowledge base while expanding their portfolio and best practices to foster and construct creative activities that support student success in the classroom. Investigation and discussion of the history, and current status of the original hand pulled relief print , as well as proper methods for conservation and exhibition of prints. Participants will engage in a wide range of lithographic techniques individually and in combination.
Teachers enrolled in this offering for credit must hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Tuition fee for credit is above any fees required by Mark Arts fees. In addition, teachers must register and provide all required payments through Mark Arts.
Doug Billings received an MFA in Printmaking from Wichita State University. He established a new printmaking program at Mark Arts in 2002 and has been teaching printmaking classes since then. Billings founded and is the director of the Tallgrass Press Printmakers Association, established in 2013. He is also a member of the Boston Printmakers, the Society of American Graphic Artists, the American Color Print Society, the Philadelphia Print Club and the American Print Alliance. He has exhibited his work in Australia, Europe and across the United States. He is a member and former president Gallery XII in Wichita and a former president and board member of the Artist Guild of Wichita.
Textures on the Wheel Demonstration
May 12 | 6 – 8 pm
$20 – In this demonstration-based workshop, students will be shown a variety simple techniques for creating texture and enhancing the surface of wheel thrown pots. Learn about faceting, making imprints, using slips, resist reliefs and more! These methods of surface decoration will add tactile and visual interest to your ceramic works.
Troy Becker is head of the ceramics department at Mark Arts. He received his BFA from Wichita State University in studio Art with an emphasis in ceramics. His ceramic styles vary from artistic hand-built forms to highly crafted thrown pottery. He has shown his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Wichita. Becker was also the 2009-2010 Artist in Residence at Mark Arts.

In-Depth Exploration of Intaglio Printmaking
July 28 – 29 | 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
$260 – In this 2-day workshop, students will develop a thorough understanding of the methods and techniques of the many variations of Intaglio Printmaking. This includes the development of skills in creating, etching, drawing, inking, and printing intaglio plates. Students will use dry point on plastic plates, create a collagraph plate by collaging together various textured materials, and line etch & aqua-tint a copper plate.
Through workshop/studio time, students will deepen their knowledge base while expanding their portfolio and best practices to foster and construct creative activities that support student success in the classroom. This class includes investigation and discussion of the history, and current status of the original hand-pulled relief print, as well as proper methods for conservation and exhibition of prints.
