Continuing Ed: In-Depth Exploration of Relief Printmaking

K-12 educators will develop a thorough understand of the methods and techniques of the many variations of Relief Printmaking. Including the development of skills in carving, inking and printing relief plates (including 1 plate/2 plate & reduction prints); Creating muti-color mono-print relief prints using stencil techniques & texturing techniques (including sponging, squeegeeing, & splattering). Through workshop/studio time, educators will deepen their knowledge base while expanding their portfolio and best practices to foster and construct creative activities that support student success in the classroom. Investigation and discussion of the history, and current status of the original hand pulled relief print, as well as proper methods for conservation and exhibition of prints. Participants will engage in several relief printmaking techniques, individually and in combination. This offering is open to all experience levels.

Doug Billings received a master’s in fine arts in Printmaking from Wichita State University. He established a new printmaking program at Mark Arts in 2002 and has taught printmaking classes since then. Billings founded and is the director of the Tallgrass Press Printmakers Association, established in 2013. He is also a member of the Boston Printmakers, the Society of American Graphic Artists, the American Color Print Society, the Philadelphia Print Club, and the American Print Alliance. He has exhibited his work in Australia, Europe, and across the United States. He is a member and former president Gallery XII in Wichita and a former president and board member of the Artist Guild of Wichita.

K-12 educators have the option to receive graduate-level credit when they enroll through Mark Arts and Friends University.
